What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
The main skills I feel I have developed through this module have been software based and the ability to use an entirely new software package. Although not hugely competent in the production of work using After Effects, I think it is a very useful piece of software to understand and could have recurrence on future ability to gain jobs/placements etc, knowing something that a lot of other don't. Along with this comes put down skills, and drawing etc, getting back to hand rendering for story boarding was very useful and I feel I have gained a little in this sense too. I also feel I've gained a lot in terms of organisation, both during work on complex software packages like after effects but also in the production and presentation of that work. I've learnt to think much more logically and systematically when working on the computers, naming and organising files so that it doesn't become a problem in itself on top of the work. The collection and presentation of my work I think is also improving due to the use of the blog in this module being much different, with a lot of work going on that has the ability to look very cluttered and busy. Issuu and vimeo have both been abused however the outcome is a much more organised and clear blog than in previous modules.
Despite this, I think there's always room for improvement and by no means have I used these skills to their full potential, especially in terms of the software. I think moving away from working on a whole, and doing a lot of smaller tests may have benefited in the production of more effective final outcomes for both briefs.
What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
Similarly to the last question, I feel the main approach to design production that I've developed through this module has been organisation as it has really helped speed up my development process. it also helps access work easily allowing you to see the development you're making. Furthermore, story boarding was very useful as it allowed visualisation of ideas on paper and gave much more direction moving through onto the software.
What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalised on them?
Strengths I could identify in my work, as normal tend to be the use of type. I really enjoy typography and it's something I try to get across in all my work, although I'm aware that the type in these sequences isn't anything special, I think it complements the visuals nicely. I also enjoyed making the packaging and took some time out of after effects to actually craft my sleeves. My design practice blog I think is also a little better than previous modules and I hope it will continue to do so throughout the rest of the second and third year.
What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?
Weaknesses I'd identify in my work from this module I'd say were my willingness to experiment and change the work I'd already produced. I felt I had something fairly strong visually and became a bit too focused on the images and animation of them, as opposed to the bits in between them, which is where I think my animation suffers, transitions. Had I been a bit more willing to experiment, I probably would have come up with something I was much more pleased with.
Identify five things you will do differently next time and what you expect to gain from doing these?
- Try no to get caught up on producing what I had in mind, even if there is chance that I can better it. If it goes wrong it's not the end of the world I just need to be able to identify why it is and know how to change it.
- Try to keep on top of my context blogging, it has taken a back foot in this module where in the last it was almost a focus, I feel there can only be beneficial results from getting a lot of research.
- Aim to work more on paper in order to develop more informed and creative solutions to problems. I often find myself working on screen and not really knowing what I want to produce, taking a step back and working out on paper what I want to achieve always helps.
- As usual, time management, I feel I've become much better over the course of this module particularly because of the amount of work needed and the time spent on it, however it can always be improved. Especially towards the beginnings of a module.
- Write lists and be as organised in my approach to work as possible. These always help focus my effort and I think if I were to do this I'd be more productive with my time in the studio, so I will actually be able to go home and relax at some point.

Interim Evaluation
Design Direction
Strengths
Subject with good visuals to work from. Feel I know where it is going in terms of animation and what I've left to do.
Weaknesses
Choice of animation style could prove a little limiting but can find ways to work around it.
Design Development
Strengths
Coming on Ok, again because I know where I want the visuals be and how I need to go about doing it, I feel a little more confident I'll be pleased with the outcome.
Weaknesses
A lot more to work on and need to get down to animating a lot more substantially instead of creating a slideshow. Thinking more in terms of the transitions would be useful.
Visual Quality
Strengths
Good visuals from sourced images and very happy with how they are coming together in after effects, especially with type.
Weaknesses
Because of the subtleties of the animation I need to find a good way of transitioning between them that may inject some energy into the animation or just tie them all together nicely. Also need a new song to go along with the visuals because my original choice, Kashmir, doesn't really go with the animation.
Technical Competence
Strengths
My technical competence on After Effects is growing slowly. The workshops are really helpful but still finding after effects very difficult when working without some kind of guidance. Find it's based very much around working methodically/logically/in order.
Weaknesses
My main problem when working in most software packages is the ability to work methodically/logically/in order, even more so when working on multiple layers. I usually try to stick to as few as possible so as not to complicate things but not really possible with animation.
Action Plan
Organise all files and name everything!
Work on transitions between compositions in order to get a more effective title sequence.
Packaging design
Context and design practice blog up to date
Storyboard!

Self evaluation.
1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
From this module I think one of the main skills that I developed would have been crafting skills, and the quality of finished product. This gave a much more professional finish and I think it was applied most effectively in the speaking from experience brief. Where crafting was important to give my booklet a quality finish.
2. What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they
informed your design development process?
I think the main methods of research I have used for this module have been questionnaires and surveys and internet research into existing design practice. I found that the use of surveys was very useful in the group brief and in the last brief, speaking from experience, as they helped me to gauge my responses from other peoples experience of the course.
3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
I think the main strengths I can identify in my work from this module are the quality of my finished product and my ability to research and blog consistently to inform my own design. I need to push these through to the next modules and beyond as I think these will continue to help inform my design practice. Crafting and quality of finish are important to give a professional finish, which is always important when you want something to stand out.
4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?
I think my main weakness continues to be the amount of work I produce, especially by hand as this is often a very useful tool for continued development of a project. In the first module I spent a lot of time working on my drawing and developing briefs away from the computer and I think I need to go back to this in order to complete a brief to its potential, and in a way that I am pleased with.
5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
- Go back to hand rendering and putting my ideas onto paper before moving to the computer as I think it’s always good to have visual reference from hand drawn ideas.
- Try to work consistently throughout a brief instead of slumping my workload at points, this will help me build a more thorough body of work for every brief.
- Try to check back on my blogs more often to see if I’m missing work at any point, this will hep in the long run as I won’t have to find out on the day of the hand in that something is missing.
- Blog daily in order to stay on top of my work, I think this will also help in the production of my work, as it will give me incentive to aim to produce something to blog at the end of each day. It will also help me stay on top of my research and avoid situations like the one above.
- Use a broader range of research sources, such as books, found materials, blogs, questionnaires etc to give me a stronger hold on the subject I am working on for a brief. This will help overall in my development and in the production of a relevant and appropriate outcome. Remember that the Internet isn’t the only source of research.

End of module self evaluation. OUGD102.
WHAT SKILLS HAVE YOU DEVELOPED THROUGH THIS MODULE AND HOW EFFECTIVELY DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE APPLIED THEM?
During this module, I have learnt a lot about information graphics and the application of research, especially quantitative such as facts & figures, into clear and informative graphics. I have also learnt about the processes involved in book making and was able to apply these to my collection 100 brief effectively. I used the skills gained in regards to research and information graphics fairly effectively during the two main briefed projects.
WHAT APPROACHES TO/METHODS OF RESEARCH HAVE YOU DEVELOPED AND HOW HAVE THEY INFORMED YOUR DESIGN DEVELOPMENT PROCESS?
I have made use of questionnaires more frequently than in any other brief to gain a good amount of primary qualitative feedback for both the 'what if?' and 'collection 100' briefs. This helped me to gain valuable information on peoples opinions which may otherwise be difficult to acquire. These proved a useful starting point for the collection 100 brief especially as one of the main topics whenever questioning anyone about hair, was celebrity hairstyles.
WHAT STRENGTHS CAN YOU IDENTIFY IN YOUR WORK AND HOW HAVE/WILL YOU CAPITALISE ON THESE?
I think my main strength in this module was consistency of visuals throughout briefs. Especially on digitally produced pieces, allowing me to gain a visually coherent & consistent body of work that I can easily build upon in up coming briefs.
WHAT WEAKNESSES CAN YOU IDENTIFY IN YOUR WORK AND HOW WILL YOU ADDRESS THESE MORE FULLY?
I think one of my main weaknesses up to this point, and something becoming rather more irritating is my willingness to make design decisions, usually regarding direction for a project. I need to work on gaining an idea more quickly, as even if I choose to move in a different direction, it will have provided me with a starting point for both concept and visuals. I also think I need to push briefs more and have the daring to create something really visually exciting...
IDENTIFY 5 THINGS THAT YOU WILL DO DIFFERENTLY NEXT TIME AND WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO GAIN FROM DOING SO?
-Keep up to date with blogger
blogging quickly builds up, keeping up to date would allow me more time to work on product towards the end of briefs.
-Put all my ideas onto paper.
No matter how bad they are it will always help with quickly identifying a starting point for briefs.
-Work on my time management.
I have begun writing to do lists which have proved useful towards the end of the module and would like to continue the good habit. This will also allow me a better balance between work and everything else.
- Collect in depth research
Try to collect a comprehensive body of in depth research as it has proved useful in gaining direction in collection brief and will certainly help moving onwards.
-Use my research more effectively...
Use my research into digital media and product to inform designs, possibly to give a more interesting aesthetic & develop my skills as a designer. Get a bit of daring to push visuals aswell.

End of module self evaluation.
1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
I think the main skills I have developed up to this point have been software knowledge and in the initial stages of a brief surrounding ideas generation. Being able to put my ideas onto paper clearly so that I can work with them effectively. I have gained a good grounding in illustrator, a program I had never previously used and this has been really beneficial in terms of taking my ideas through from paper to digital outcome, and should really help with the onward development of my digital outcomes.
2. What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
Research is one area in which I don't feel particularly confident as I find it is sometimes a process that almost becomes overlooked as I try to get into my design work as quickly as possible. Although throughout the continued use of the internet for blogging etc, I have been able to source and document a huge amount of what I would consider to be really effective and influential design which has informed and inspired my design practice. An example would be my type illustration for "No News is Good News" which was a technique I saw and wanted to try myself.
3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
I think the strengths of my work lie in using the software to bring together my ideas and illustrations digitally without taking away from the designs effectiveness. I plan to look a lot more into the process of vectoring hand rendered experiments as this has given me a really strong base to work on my ideas digitally in conjunction with my illustrated development.
4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?
The weaknesses in my work are definitely based around time management. Keeping up to date with my blogging can sometimes be a bit of an issue and also creating what I feel to be an adequate amount of development , that I am pleased with for a project. I think this just proves that you will always take the most critical view on your own work, and also that there is always improvements to be made. In terms of keeping up to date I will try to set myself amounts of work to complete each day so that I do not have to rush to complete something towards the end, as this can only be detrimental.
5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these.
- Try to work in a range of media to hopefully give me a greater range of diversity in my outcomes and to maybe find techniques that I really enjoy working with.
- Use research on the internet and from the library etc as a tool to inform my practice much more, rather than something I often find becomes an afterthought.
- Try to make clearer connections between research and practice so that it is more obvious where my ideas may be coming from.
- Keep blogger up to date and stay on top of projects by setting a minimum amount of work so that I do not end up getting bogged down by briefs.
-Try to work initially by hand, developing a range of ideas, which I can then take forward digitally. As opposed to focusing on single ideas which often don't give much scope for further development.
